Between mid-July and early October, humpback whales from both hemispheres migrate through Panamanian waters — one of the few places on earth where both populations meet. Thousands of whales travel from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warm, protected waters off Panama City, where they breed and give birth to their calves.
The day begins with pickup at your hotel and a transfer to the Amador Causeway, where you board an expedition boat (departing 7:30am) with a naturalist guide. The route passes ships waiting to transit the Canal's Pacific entrance, with a chance to spot dolphins along the way. Upon reaching the Pearl Islands archipelago — about 35 miles from the Canal's southern entrance and made up of more than 100 islands, many small and uninhabited — you'll navigate among islands such as Contadora, Chapera, Mogo Mogo and Pacheca.
The Pearl Islands have a rich history: originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, they later drew Spanish conquistadors in search of their coveted pearls — legend has it that Isla Contadora, "Counting Island," was where pearls were counted and registered before being shipped to Spain — and later served as a refuge for pirates raiding the treasure-laden Spanish fleet.
Whale watching follows international sustainable-viewing guidelines at all times, prioritizing the whales' wellbeing and avoiding any form of stress or intimidation. Biologists and scientific photographers are sometimes on board collecting data for their research; the naturalist guide uses a hydrophone to listen to the whales' songs, with information shared with the American Cetacean Society.
Snorkel gear is available on board, along with inflatable paddleboards and kayaks for those who want to explore beyond whale watching. The experience includes healthy snacks, lunch, water and soft drinks throughout the tour.
No shared departures, no fixed schedules — a private encounter with one of the planet's great migratory phenomena.
Dietary restrictions, special arrangements and any other particular requirement can be coordinated to tailor the experience to your occasion or preference.
