A full-day private expedition into Soberanía National Park, considered one of Central America's most accessible areas for bird and wildlife watching.
The tour begins early with pickup at your hotel lobby and a transfer into the park, within the Panama Canal watershed. After crossing the Chagres River, the first stop is the Rainforest Discovery Center, where a 32-meter observation tower offers privileged views over the forest canopy — an ideal moment to witness the morning flight of keel-billed toucans, red-lored amazons and the stealthy passage of howler monkeys. From there, the tour continues along the network of trails around the center, stopping at the hummingbird feeders, where you can observe up to 10 different species up close.
Soberanía protects 22,000 hectares of tropical rainforest, home to 525 recorded bird species — including the black hawk-eagle, black-cheeked woodpecker, broad-billed motmot and blue cotinga, among many others — and 105 mammal species, including large felines, tamanduas, two- and three-toed sloths, four monkey species, and species under CITES protection.
Toward the end of the morning, enjoy a picnic lunch, with the chance to continue exploring the Canal watershed's habitats before returning to your hotel in the early afternoon.
For serious birders: the tour can be extended to Pipeline Road, one of Central America's great birding routes — host for 19 consecutive years to the Audubon Society's world-record Christmas Bird Count, with 357 species recorded in 24 hours. This extension is coordinated in advance to assign the right expert guide based on the group's interest.
