The details

The geographical fact that defines Panama: it's possible to go from the Pacific to the Caribbean in a single day, physically crossing the Canal that made that connection possible. This is a full transit of the Panama Canal, ocean to ocean, along the waterway built through the labor of more than 75,000 men and women over 10 years — the same route more than 900,000 vessels have sailed since 1914.

The day begins with pickup at your hotel and a short transfer to Flamenco Island, on the Amador Causeway, on the Pacific side of the Canal, where you board the vessel. The first sight is the Bridge of the Americas, rising over 100 meters above sea level, while a buffet-style breakfast is served on board.

The Canal runs 80 kilometers between the Pacific and the Caribbean, cutting through the lowest, narrowest point of the isthmus. Heading north, the first stop is Miraflores Locks — the tallest in the system due to the Pacific's extreme tidal variation — where the vessel is raised 17 meters in two steps, transitioning from salt water to fresh water. Next, at Pedro Miguel Locks, it rises another 9 meters into the Gaillard Cut, the Canal's narrowest stretch, carved through rock between the mountains of the Continental Divide.

The Gaillard Cut opens into Gatún Lake, where the Chagres River — the only river in the world that flows into two oceans — joins the waterway. Lunch is served on board with views of the cranes and dredging equipment near Gamboa. Halfway across the lake, you'll pass Barro Colorado Island, a Smithsonian Institute research site since the lake was formed. Just before reaching the Gatún Locks, the Gatún Dam comes into view; there, the vessel descends 26 meters in three steps to sea level, continuing on to the Port of Cristóbal, in the Caribbean.

Disembarkation is in Cristóbal, where you'll board an air-conditioned bus for the 1.5-hour ride back to Flamenco Island, where your driver awaits for the final transfer to your hotel.

One day, one ocean to the other — not by land, but by crossing the engineering feat that made the connection possible.
