A visit to the largest forested island in the Panama Canal, home to a biological research station internationally recognized by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).
The tour begins with pickup at your hotel and a transfer to the STRI dock in the town of Gamboa. From there, a 45-minute boat ride across Gatún Lake — passing enormous ships in transit through the Canal — leads to Barro Colorado Island, part of the nature monument that bears its name.
After a brief introduction to the area's natural history from your guide, the visit continues with a 2–3 hour hike along challenging trails, with steep sections and stairs. The tour ends at the Visitor Center, where an exhibit delves into the monument's research and natural history, followed by a cafeteria-style lunch with a variety of dishes, including a vegetarian option.
The experience focuses on trail exploration and the island's wildlife; it does not include access to STRI's active research laboratories.
Most trails are approximately 2 km long, with steep sections and stairs — not recommended for people with heart or respiratory conditions, knee injuries, or generally poor health. Visitors coming from non-tropical countries should note that heat and humidity can be demanding on the body. Bringing water is recommended.
Additional dietary restrictions, special arrangements and any other particular requirement can be coordinated to tailor the experience to your occasion or preference.
